Gladden Food Pantry Mural Franklinton, Ohio DAY 1

Day 1

Day one progress of the Franklinton Gladden Food Pantry mural!

Today’s plan was to start at the top and work down blocking in initial background and shapes. Using a projector is not practical at this location so all painting is matched to a drawn grid overlay on the digital mockup that matches the wall’s cinder block. Today I painted the sky background and started painting the Columbus sky line. Also added in graphic silhouettes of the Gladden Community House and with additional space I blocked in the Columbus Metropolitan Library who partners with Children’s Hunger Alliance to provide after school snacks to children.

The mural’s theme is the collation of childhood whimsy and being fed. Hunger can completely shut down imagination and creativity. This mural will depict a family on bikes, a seemingly routine means of getting from one location to the next, yet their surroundings will by embellished by childhood whimsy. Flowers in their bike baskets and along the pavement symbolize and reminds us of the source of our food and our duty to preserve the precious pollinators imperative to our planet and food sources. The bikes are a nod to a supporter of this project, Franklinton Cycle Works, and the importance of community support and transportation for families who need assistance getting proper nutrition.
